One of the longest standing and most satisfying crafts are patchwork quilts. Creating a big, beautiful quilt for your home, or to give as a gift, is easier than you might think. Here are a few tips to get you started.
Getting Started With A Plan
If you’re looking into how to do patchwork quilting, the first step is to think about what you would like the completed quilt to look like and to find your fabrics. Having a proper plan before you get started will ensure a much better outcome.
Cutting Up Sections
Once you have your pattern and have chosen your fabrics it is time to cut out your pieces. It’s really important that you cut your pieces accurately to ensure that everything fits together properly. You might want to have a practice with some scrap fabric if it’s something you are new to.
Sewing It All Together
Now you’ve cut your pieces it’s time to start sewing. You can do this by hand but it is much easier, and quicker, to use sewing machines. If you’ve never used one before it can take a bit of practice but once you get the hang of it making your patchwork quilt will take a fraction of the time.
Pressing For Neatness
Once you have sewn two pieces together you need to press them using an iron to flatten out the seam so that when the whole quilt is put together you will end up with a much neater finish. At this point, you can also cut off excess fabric, called squaring so that your finished quilt ends up square and not misshapen.
Quilting
After you’ve sewn everything together it’s time to do the actual quilting part. You can do this on a sewing machine too. It doesn’t have to be a complicated pattern, sometimes simple is best!
